The Food College of Nanchang University originated from the Department of Food Engineering of Jiangxi University of Technology and the Department of Food Science of Jiangxi University. In 1987, Jiangxi University of Technology established the "Food Industry College", when the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Chen Yun was the title of the college. In 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi University of Technology merged to form Nanchang University. The former College of Food Industry of Jiangxi University of Technology merged with the former Department of Food Science of Jiangxi University to form the College of Food Industry of Nanchang University. In 1994, it was reorganized with the Department of Biological Science and Engineering to be the life science of Nanchang University. School of Food Engineering. In 2014, due to the development of the discipline, the Food Institute was established.


The university has the national key disciplines of food science (two in the province), the key construction disciplines of the “211” project, and the key disciplines of Jiangxi Province. It has the only national key laboratory in the field of food science in China's universities, and has national bio-efficient conversion technology for agricultural products. The Joint Engineering Research Center and the Engineering Research Center of the Biomass Conversion Ministry of Education are also supported by the Sino-German Joint Research Institute, the Sino-German Food Engineering Center, and the Jiangxi Provincial Agricultural Products Fine Processing Collaborative Innovation Center (currently, there are national key laboratories and national projects at the same time. In the fourth round of national assessments announced in December 2017, Nanchang University's food science and engineering discipline (0832) leapt to the third in the food discipline nationwide, becoming the first discipline in Jiangxi Province to enter the top three disciplines in the country. The school has one post-doctoral research station for food science and engineering; one doctoral degree in food science and engineering, and nine doctoral programs in food nutrition and hygiene. There are 1 degree authorization point, 6 academic master's degree authorization points in the second-level disciplines, and 3 professional degree master's degree authorization points. In addition, there are also college teachers who are working on the master's degree and the incumbent to apply for the master's degree. In the "2014 China University Graduate Education Evaluation Report", our food science and engineering discipline was rated as "five-star discipline", becoming the only "China's first-class graduate discipline" in Jiangxi Province in 2014. The college has 114 full-time teachers, including 47 professors, 45 associate professors, 86 doctors with a doctoral degree (accounting for 75.4%), and 66 overseas students over the past year, accounting for 57.9%. In the past five years, the college has undertaken 178 national research projects such as the National Key Research and Development Program, the 973 Program, the 863 Program, the National Science and Technology Support Program, and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Project, including 144 National Natural Science Fund projects, National Natural Science Foundation and National Outstanding Youth. Each fund project has a research fund of 290 million yuan. He won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of provincial and ministerial level in Jiangxi Province, and the first prize of 14 provincial and ministerial level scientific research achievements; authorized 298 invention patents; published 1509 papers, including SCI 746 papers. At the same time, it has cooperated with well-known enterprises such as Nestle, COFCO, Yili, Jiangzhong, Huangshanghuang and Sunshine to carry out industry-university-research cooperation, and a number of scientific research achievements have achieved industrialization, making important contributions in serving the country and Jiangxi's economic construction.


The internationalization of the college has achieved remarkable results. It has cooperated well with scientific research institutes in Germany, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Singapore. Among them, Sino-German cooperation has been praised as an outstanding example of Sino-German technical cooperation. Hosting high-level academic conferences at home and abroad; actively expanding international cooperation and training talent channels, among which “China-Canada International Science and Technology Cooperation Food Talent Training Project” was selected as the “Innovative Talent International Cooperation Training Project” (the only one in the province) in 2016, and was awarded in 2015. The College consists of the Department of Food Science and Engineering, the Department of Food Nutrition and Safety, and the Department of Food Fermentation and Bioengineering. It has three undergraduate majors in food science and engineering, food quality and safety, and bioengineering. The food science and engineering majors have been approved at the national level. Featured professional and provincial brand majors are included in the Ministry of Education's first “excellence plan”. There are 1489 full-time students, including 109 doctoral students, 435 master students, and 945 undergraduates.


The school focuses on building world-class disciplines, aims at talent cultivation, promotes teaching through scientific research, promotes scientific research through teaching, and focuses on cultivating students' scientific research consciousness and ability.
